GEO for Clinics in India: How to Show Up in ChatGPT and AI Search (2026)
By Clinic Stride · · 4 min read

A patient in Nagpur looking for a dentist used to ask a neighbour. More and more, they type the question into ChatGPT, Gemini or Google and read the AI answer at the top. That answer usually names a handful of clinics. GEO for clinics (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of making your clinic one of the names in it.
Few clinics in tier-2 and tier-3 cities are doing this yet, so the clinics that start now have less competition for those few spots.

GEO vs SEO: what changes
SEO is about ranking on a results page that the patient scrolls through. GEO is about being named inside the AI's answer. Many patients read that answer and stop there, so if you aren't in it, they may never see the links below it.
Three things are different:
- AI tools name sources. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews often name a clinic and link to where they found it. That might be a listing site, a local article or your own website.
- Plain sentences get quoted. An AI tool can only repeat what is written somewhere. If your site never says something like "We are a dental clinic in Manewada, Nagpur, offering implants, root canals and braces", there is nothing for it to quote.
- Your details need to match everywhere. If your name, address, services or timings differ between Google Business Profile, Justdial and your website, the AI has conflicting information about you and may use another clinic's details instead.
What AI tools look at when they suggest a clinic
Much of it is what a careful patient would check:
- Structured data (schema markup) that tells machines what your clinic is, where it is and what it treats
- Mentions on other sites, such as directories, local news and "clinics in [city]" articles
- Your Google Business Profile, including its reviews and ratings
- Specific service pages. A page that explains your root canal treatment gives the AI far more to work with than a homepage line like "quality care you can trust"
A 7-step GEO checklist for your clinic
- Check where you stand. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity "best [your specialty] clinic in [your city]" and save screenshots of the answers. You'll compare against these later.
- Write one standard description of your clinic: name, specialty, area, city and three to five services. Use the same wording on your website and every listing.
- Add schema markup to your website. Use
MedicalClinicwith your address, services, timings and doctors. - Answer common patient questions on your site in plain text: consultation fees, what happens at the first visit, cashless insurance, whether you see children. Use the question as the heading and answer it in the first sentence.
- Fix your listings. Complete your Google Business Profile and keep it current, then do the same on Justdial, Practo and the other directories patients use in your city.
- Get mentioned on other sites. A mention in a local news story or a "clinics in [city]" article gives AI tools a second source that confirms who you are.
- Check again every month. AI answers change, so compare against your first screenshots and update your pages when something slips.
What it costs a smaller clinic
Most of the early work is cleanup: matching your details everywhere, writing clear service pages and adding schema. That takes time and attention more than a big budget, which is why it suits a smaller clinic that can move quickly.
